Why Concentrated Head Pressure Is a Concern for Parents

Baby skulls are soft and malleable in the first months of life — prolonged pressure on one spot during sleep and rest is the primary driver of head shape concerns that Australian parents worry about.

🛏️
Back Sleeping

Safe sleep guidelines mean babies spend significant time on their back — which concentrates pressure on the same area of the skull every time

⏱️
Cumulative Hours

Newborns sleep 14–17 hours a day. That's a lot of contact time between a soft skull and a firm surface without any pressure redistribution

🔄
Preferred Turn Direction

Many babies naturally turn their head to one side during sleep, concentrating pressure on that side of the occiput repeatedly over weeks

🪑
Seat & Pram Time

Time in car seats, bouncers and prams also accumulates — surfaces without any give add to the total head contact pressure across the day

🧠
Skull Malleability

The skull plates haven't fused yet. This is necessary for birth and brain growth — but also means the shape is responsive to sustained external pressure

💨
Heat Buildup

Non-breathable pillow surfaces trap heat against the skull. A warm microenvironment can contribute to increased skin contact and redness in the contact area

What we can say — and what we can't The Ergo Sleep™ Baby Pillow is designed to help distribute pressure evenly and support airflow around the head. It is not a medical device and is not designed to diagnose, treat or prevent any medical condition including plagiocephaly. If you have concerns about your baby's head shape, please consult your GP or paediatrician.

How TPE Distributes Head Pressure Differently

TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) is an open-cell flexible material — the same category used in high-end ergonomic products because of how it responds to contact load. Unlike foam, which compresses and creates a hard bottom-out point, TPE flexes across its entire surface area.

The ergonomic concave centre of the Ergo Sleep™ Baby Pillow cradles the head and distributes contact pressure across a wider surface — rather than concentrating it at the single lowest point. This is the core engineering difference from a standard foam or polyester pillow.

  • Open-cell structure allows air to circulate around the head
  • Concave centre encourages a natural resting position
  • Maintains its shape — doesn't flatten to a hard surface over time
  • Works in the cot, pram, car seat and bouncer

TPE vs a Standard Baby Pillow — Side by Side

The material difference is visible before you even place a baby on it.

Standard foam baby pillow comparison Standard Foam Pillow

The open TPE lattice structure is visible — air moves through the material rather than being trapped against the skin. A standard foam pillow has a closed surface that holds heat against the contact area. Over hours of sleep, this difference in breathability and pressure response is significant.

The Compression Test

What happens when you press down hard on the pillow — and then release.

TPE Returns. Foam Doesn't.

A standard polyester or foam baby pillow compresses under weight and doesn't fully return to its original shape. After weeks of use, it has permanently deformed — meaning the concave support structure is gone and the baby is resting on a compressed flat surface.

TPE returns to its original structure after compression. The ergonomic concave centre stays intact through months of regular use — the support characteristic that matters on day one still exists on day 90.

  • No permanent deformation under sustained weight
  • Concave centre maintained throughout use life
  • No bottoming out on a hard foam core
  • Machine washable cover — easy to maintain

What's Inside the Ergo Sleep™ Baby Pillow

Design and material details that matter for a baby product.

🌬️
Open-Cell TPE Structure

Air circulates through the TPE lattice rather than being trapped against the scalp. Reduces heat buildup during extended contact — particularly important during warmer Australian months.

Ergonomic Concave Centre

The concave design cradles the head and distributes contact pressure across a broader surface area rather than concentrating it at the lowest point. The centre holds its shape — it doesn't compress flat with use.

🔄
Shape Retention

TPE returns to its original shape after compression. Unlike polyester or foam fill that permanently deforms under sustained weight, the ergonomic structure stays intact throughout the product's use life.

🧺
Machine-Washable Cover

The soft outer cover removes via zip for machine washing on a gentle cold cycle. Essential for a baby product — the cover can be washed as frequently as needed without affecting the TPE core.

🚗
Multi-Location Use

Sized and designed for use in the cot, bassinet, pram, car seat and bouncer — not just for sleep. Wherever your baby rests their head, the same pressure distribution and breathability apply.

What Australian Parents Are Saying

Verified purchases from across Australia.

★★★★★

"Our paediatrician mentioned we should look at a breathable pillow to vary the pressure on our son's head. This one was recommended in our mother's group. The TPE material feels completely different to any baby pillow I'd seen before — you can literally feel the airflow through it."

Olivia R. · Melbourne VIC · Verified Purchase
★★★★★

"Got three — one for the cot, one for the pram, one for the car seat. The 3-pack price made it work. My daughter's head never gets sweaty anymore which used to happen constantly with the foam pillow we were using before."

Kate B. · Brisbane QLD · Verified Purchase
★★★★★

"The compression test sold me — I pressed it flat and it just sprang back. Our last pillow went flat within 3 weeks. This one is still in the same shape after 4 months of use. The cover washes beautifully too."

Danielle T. · Sydney NSW · Verified Purchase
★★★★★

"Our physio suggested a head support pillow with some give to it. The TPE is perfect — it's not rigid like memory foam and it doesn't flatten like fibre fill. The breathable structure is genuinely different from anything else I found in Australia."

Priya K. · Gold Coast QLD · Verified Purchase
★★★★★

"Works in the car seat — this was the main thing I needed. Most baby pillows aren't firm enough to stay in position in a car seat but the TPE structure holds its shape perfectly. No sagging, no moving. Very happy."

Liz M. · Perth WA · Verified Purchase
★★★★★

"Bought this when my son was 6 weeks. He's now 5 months and we're still using it daily. The cover has been washed probably 20 times and looks brand new. The pillow itself hasn't changed shape at all. Really impressed with the quality for the price."

Baby Flat Head Pillow — FAQs

Common questions from Australian parents.

What age is this baby pillow suitable for?
The Ergo Sleep™ Baby Pillow is designed for use from newborn onwards. As with all products used with infants, supervised use is recommended, particularly in the earliest weeks. If you have any questions about suitability for your specific baby, consult your GP, midwife or child health nurse.
Does a baby pillow prevent flat head?
The Ergo Sleep™ Baby Pillow is designed to help distribute head pressure more evenly across a broader surface area, and to support airflow around the head. It is not a medical device and we don't claim it prevents or treats plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome). If you have concerns about your baby's head shape, please consult your GP or paediatrician — early assessment is important.
Can I use this in a pram or car seat?
Yes — the pillow is designed for multi-location use including the cot, bassinet, pram, car seat and bouncer. The TPE material maintains its shape in a car seat without sagging or flattening, and the breathable structure supports airflow in enclosed spaces like car seats where heat can build up quickly.
What makes TPE different from foam or polyester fill?
TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) has an open-cell lattice structure that allows air to pass through the material — unlike closed-cell foam or dense polyester fill that trap air and heat against the contact surface. TPE also returns to its original shape after compression, whereas foam and polyester fill permanently deform over weeks of use. The ergonomic support structure that exists on day one still exists on day 90.
How do I clean the baby pillow?
The outer cover zips off and is machine washable on a gentle cold cycle. The TPE core should not be machine washed — wipe with a damp cloth and allow to air dry. We recommend washing the cover frequently (every few days for newborns), as it's in direct contact with the baby's skin and scalp.
Is it safe to use a pillow with a newborn?
Safe sleep guidelines in Australia (Red Nose Australia) recommend a firm, flat sleep surface for babies. A pillow adds a surface element — use with appropriate supervision, particularly with very young infants. The Ergo Sleep™ Baby Pillow is designed with breathability and appropriate firmness as key design considerations, but parental supervision and individual circumstances should always guide use. Consult your child health nurse or GP if you are unsure.
When should I see a paediatrician about flat head?
See your GP or paediatrician if you notice significant head shape asymmetry by 2–3 months of age, if you notice the asymmetry worsening rather than improving, if your baby consistently turns their head only one way (possible torticollis), or if you have any concerns at all. Early assessment leads to more options — don't wait to see if it resolves on its own if you have concerns.
Does tummy time reduce the need for a head support pillow?
Tummy time and positional support serve different roles. Tummy time removes back-of-head pressure during supervised awake time and builds neck and upper body strength. A breathable head support pillow addresses the extended back-sleeping hours when tummy time isn't possible. Most paediatric guidance recommends both — plenty of supervised tummy time during awake periods, and appropriate sleep surface support during sleep.
Will the TPE go flat over time?
No — TPE returns to its original shape after compression because of its elastic cellular structure. Unlike polyester fibre fill (which permanently compresses under sustained weight) or foam (which bottoms out), TPE maintains the ergonomic concave shape that makes the pillow effective. This is one of the key practical differences in real-world use beyond the first few weeks.
Why buy multiple pillows?
Having a pillow in each location your baby regularly uses — cot, pram, car seat, bouncer, grandparents' house — means the support is always there without moving it between locations. It also means you always have a clean one available while the cover is washing. The 2, 3 and 4-pack pricing makes this practical at a significantly lower per-pillow cost than buying individually.
Does free AU shipping apply to all orders?
Yes — free standard shipping to all Australian states and territories, including regional and rural areas. Delivery is typically 3–7 business days from dispatch, with metro areas usually receiving orders within 3–5 days. Afterpay is also available on all orders.
Can I return it if it's not right for us?
Yes — we offer 60-day returns. If the pillow isn't right for your baby for any reason within 60 days of purchase, contact us and we'll arrange a return. We want every parent to feel confident buying without risk.
